Famous author J.K. Rowling, of Harry Potter fame, amassed an incredible fortune with her books, that were later turned into movies. And if you haven’t seen one or at least heard of them, then you are not from this planet. Rowling’s net worth rose to well above one billion dollars, which is a little more than I have in my pocket right now.
And she was on the Forbes list of billionaires for a while. But in 2012, she lost that prestigious position on the list because her worth suddenly went down. It went down because she gave an estimated $160 million to charities. She did this because of her own former financial hardships and she well knew, as a single parent, that life was a struggle back then.
She has given money to and works closely with Gingerbread, a charity thatprovides child care and helps parents find job and education opportunities. She also supports research for multiple sclerosis, which took her mother in 1990. Other efforts she supports include literacy, veterans and stopping domestic abuse. She also donates hertime and books. Says Rowling,
“You have a moral responsibility when you‘ve been given far more than you need, to do wise things with it and give intelligently.”
